Biosecurity

Staff at Shetland UHI authored “A Biosecurity Plan for the Shetland Islands”. We carry out routine monitoring of marine non-native species around Shetland and have hands-on experience in their identification. Marine non-native species (NNS) are plants and animals that have been introduced to a geographic location outside of their natural home range. NNS that are able to successfully establish a self-sustaining population that cause negative economic, environmental, and/or health impacts on the recipient environment/community are termed invasive non-native species (INNS). A biosecurity plan provides a useful and practical guidance framework for reducing the potential for NNS introduction and minimising their associated impacts.
