Digital Design Academy Programme
What is special about this course?
This 1-year programme allows students to attend college on a part-time basis on Tuesday & Thursday afternoons.
- Anderson High School pupils can apply during S6.
- Brae High School pupils can apply during S5 and S6.
Pupils will have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge for a potential further course or a career in Graphics and Media Design. The course uses the latest industry standard design software and allows pupils to build a digital web-based portfolio of their work.
Key topics and skills in Graphics Design and an introduction to Web Design & Development will be covered. Additional tutorials from basic Animation skills to Augmented Reality will also be included to provide a wide range of digital creative skills.
Entry requirements
Pupils are expected to be working towards or already have achieved Higher level.
This course covers underpinning theoretical and practical design topics in modules covering:
- Graphics Design
- Bitmap Graphics design
- Vector Graphics design
- Web Design
- Web Development using Content Management Systems
- A range of up-to-date industry standard development software will be used to allow students to develop a broad range of skills.
How will I study my course?
- Part Time
It is aimed that all classes will run face to face from the Lerwick Campus. All supporting notes will be provided on our University Virtual Learning Environment.
How long will my course last?
1 YearYou will attend college at the Shetland UHI Lerwick campus, Computing Department on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons during term time up until the Easter break.
How will I be assessed?
Students are assessed on each unit by a combination of practical, written assessments and assignments on the practical & theoretical tasks where appropriate.

Funding
There are no fees for this course and transport between school and college will be provided.
What can I do on completion of my course?
The main direct progression route locally feeds directly into the:
- HNC Digital Design & Web Development course. Modules on this Digital Design course are already part of this award.
- This HNC course acts as Year 1 to gain direct entry into Year 2 of the new UHI BScH Digital Design Development Degree course.
Previous students have also gained direct entry to other mainland University programmes.
There are several potential career paths including Graphic artists, Digital Media, Web Design & Development and Marketing.
