Managing Heritage College Certificate

What is special about this course?

Suitable for general interest or as CPD for Shetland Tour Guides.

The course will consider the nature of Heritage, what counts as heritage, how it is selected and who it’s audience is. It will also explore the challenges of presenting it and securing its survival into the future. Examples will be drawn from around the world, but always related back to challenges that are also faced locally.

Equipment

Students will require adequate broadband connectivity and a PC or laptop equipped with a camera and microphone to participate in the evening class. VC Software can be downloaded for free or accessed through the computer browser.

Most publications required are available as ebooks / online articles. Additional resources are available in UHI Shetland’s library.

How will I study my course?

  • Evening

10 evening classes supported by online reading and activities. PowerPoint presentations with discussion in the synchronous classes. VLE discussion boards and final assessment by a coursework essay.

How long will my course last?

10 Weeks

The course comprises 10 evening classes of 2 hours, conducted off campus by VC. You will also need to access online materials, read around the subject and complete an essay assessment to achieve the award.

Evening classes are from 19:30 to 21:30.

How will I be assessed?

    On completion of Managing Heritage the student should have:

    1. Be able to reflect on what constitutes heritage, and how value is identified by contemporary society.
    2. An appreciation of the threats faced and how protections are put in place.
    3. An appreciation of the compromises that are necessary to resource, the protection, ongoing study and presentation of heritage to the different stakeholders.

    Assessment by a 1500 word report supported by maps / plans and photographs.
