What is special about this course?

SSSC recognised qualification for those in a supervisory role.

You must be currently employed in the health and social care sector in a supervisory role and have been undertaking your current role for a minimum of six months.

Your employer must sponsor you and confirm that you are currently employed in a suitable supervisory role to meet the requirements of this award and that they are in a position to support you with your SVQ for the duration of the award.

Upon successful completion of this SVQ you will gain an internationally recognised qualification which provides evidence of your skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out your role successfully.

Entry requirements

  • Signed statement from your employer.
  • Minimum of 6 months continuous employment within an appropriate role and:
  • SVQ 2 SCQF Level 6 in a relevant subject area. Or:
  • 2 Scottish Highers at grade C or above (preferably including English).
  • 1 A level(s) at grade D or above.
  • 4 National 5s or Standard Grades at Credit level (or equivalent), one of which should be English if you do not have a Higher or A level.
  • Alternatively, NC Health and Social Care (SCQF Level 6).
  • Prospective students without the standard entry requirements are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

Job Role Details:

Requirements for Evidencing Social Services at SCQF level 7

SQA set specific requirements for candidates undertaking the SVQ 3 award. Therefore, applicants must satisfy all three of the following requirements in their current work role and practice. Candidates are required to have been formally undertaking this role for six months prior to start date.

Requirements :

  1. Have the defined extra responsibilities for supervising team members. Or have specific training responsibilities for staff such as ROSPA trainer. Or have an additional duties role which results in the candidate overseeing/supervising aspects of other workers practice. Or be carrying out a specific mentoring role for a named worker such as a modern apprentice.
  2. Evidence of being a shift lead on a regular continuing basis or demonstrate an equivalent autonomy and responsibility throughout the award period (12 months).
  3. Have an established key worker role and be responsible for co-ordination, including multi agency contacts. Also supporting the review of agreed outcomes and implementation of any changes.

Applicants should note that this is not a training program but an evidencing program of current practice, role and responsibility. There are knowledge tutorials to support the reflective evidencing of theory and good practice frameworks. There is also a significant observed element of your additional role and responsibilities within the SVQ 3 program.

You will be required to complete a total of 8 units - 4 Mandatory and 4 Optional Units.

Mandatory Units:

  • Promote effective communication
  • Promote health, safety and security in the work setting
  • Develop your practice through reflection and learning
  • Promote the safeguarding of Individuals

Optional Units:

Agreed with your assessor on starting the award, based on your current work role.

How will I study my course?

  • Part Time

You are allocated an Assessor for the duration of the award. They will meet you individually for planning meetings. They will also carry out the required observations of your work practice with all relevant permissions in place.

There are College based mandatory tutorials covering the theory and practice elements of the understanding you need to evidence. These support the reflective accounts where you demonstrate both work practice and the underpinning knowledge and refection.

You also have a dedicated on-line virtual learning materials (Brightspace) for a blended learning approach.

You are responsible for gathering and generating evidence using a variety of assessment methods to meet the requirement of the award from your working practice.

Assessment is carried out by you in the workplace, supported by a designated Assessor, our online virtual learning environment (Blackboard) and a tutorial workshop which enables you to generate evidence based on the actual work you are carrying out.

What can I do on completion of my course?

For registration purposes the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) require the completion of all FOUR core Units and FOUR optional Units.

You may transfer across to the children and young people sector by undertaking some additional units in SVQ Social Services: Children and Young People. The progression route for each individual will depend on your job role and level of responsibility.
