Social Services: Children and Young People (SCQF Level 7 / 9) Modern Apprenticeship

What is special about this course?

You must be currently employed as a Practitioner, Support Worker/Assistant in an early years setting - childminding, out of school clubs, education or residential/day setting for children and young people. You must have been undertaking your current role for a minimum of six months to undertake this award.

Your employer must provide a signed statement confirming that you are currently employed in a suitable role to meet the requirements of this award and that they are in a position to support you with your SVQ for the duration of the award.

Upon successful completion of this SVQ you will gain an internationally recognised qualification which provides evidence of your skills, knowledge and abilities required to carry out your role successfully.

Entry requirements

  • Signed statement from your employer.
  • Minimum of 6 months continuous employment within an appropriate role, and:
  • SVQ 2 (SCQF Level 6) in a relevant subject area. Or:
  • 2 Scottish Highers at grade C or above (preferably including English).
  • 1 A level(s) at grade D or above.
  • 4 National 5s or Standard Grades at Credit level (or equivalent) one of which should be English if you do not have a Higher or A level.
  • Alternatively, NC Early Education and Childcare (SCQF Level 6) or equivalent.
  • Prospective students without the standard entry requirements are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

You will be required to complete a total of 8 units - 4 Mandatory and 4 Optional units.

Mandatory Units:

  • Promote effective communication
  • Promote health, safety and security in the work setting
  • Develop your practice through reflection and learning
  • Promote the safeguarding of children and young people

4 Optional Units:

Agreed with your assessor on starting the award, based on your experience and current employment.

How will I study my course?

  • Part Time

You are responsible for gathering and generating evidence using a variety of assessment methods to meet the requirement of the award from your working practice. Assessment is carried out by you in the workplace, supported by a designated Assessor, our online virtual learning environment (Blackboard) and a tutorial workshop which enables you to generate evidence based on the actual work you are carrying out.

What can I do on completion of my course?

For registration purposes the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) require the completion of all FOUR core units and FOUR optional units.

You may transfer across to the adult sector by undertaking some additional units in SVQ Social Services and Healthcare. The progression route for each individual will depend on your job role and level of responsibility.
