Communication SCQF Level 4/5
What is special about this course?
This course is an alternative to a Standard Grade, Intermediate or National qualification in English, which is studied in school. It is useful for more mature students who don’t have an up-to-date English qualification. It is also a good way for younger students to improve on the English qualification they got at school.
Entry requirements
None.
This course starts with a refresher in spelling, punctuation and paragraphing. It then covers 3 topics:
- Reading
- Writing
- Talking
The course covers vocational uses of English and does not include the study of literature.
Normally students will work through SCQF Level 4 first and then progress on to SCQF Level 5.
How will I study my course?
- Part Time
You will join a class at college or at your local learning centre and learn through lecturer input, group discussions and practical exercises. You will be expected to do some study at home each week.
Assessment is a combination of observation and learner produced evidence.
How long will my course last?
1 YearPart-time course available at Shetland UHI and selected learning centres. 1.5 hours per week for one year.

Most full-time students will have their fees paid.

What can I do on completion of my course?
Academic: You could progress to further study on a range of National Certificate programmes and SVQs. You may choose to progress to Alternative to Higher English.
Employment/Career: Communication at SCQF Level 5 is a required qualification for some jobs.
Former students have: Been successful in getting employment and moving onto other college courses.
