100+ Aquaculture Apprentices
More than 100 students have been enrolled on NAFC's Modern Apprentice programme in Aquaculture since it was launched in 2013.
The modern apprenticeship programme provides practical training and skills development for people working in the aquaculture industry, from new entrants to experienced staff. Students on the programme spend most of their time learning 'on-the-job' at their employers' aquaculture sites, where they are assessed by NAFC staff, and additional training is provided at the NAFC Marine Centre in Scalloway.
The programme is offered at two levels: Level 2 is for workers new to the aquaculture industry and helps them to develop the basic skills and knowledge needed to work effectively within the industry. Level 3 is aimed at more experienced workers, senior site staff and trainee managers who already have a good understanding of the aquaculture industry. Students normally take about 12 months to complete each level of the programme and receive Scottish Vocational Qualifications on their successful completion.
More than 100 students employed by aquaculture companies in Shetland and Orkney have now been enrolled on the programme, since it was launched in 2013. There has been huge interest in the programme from aquaculture companies wishing to develop a trained, qualified and industry-competent workforce. Staff also benefit from the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills and to gain national recognised qualifications that can help them progress their careers in the aquaculture industry.
Funding is provided by Skills Development Scotland to help cover the costs of training and assessment under the Modern Apprenticeship programme.
