The annual Fish and Shellfish Biology field course brings 20 undergraduate students from the University's School of Biological Sciences, accompanied by four staff, to NAFC each year. The course incorporates a wide variety of activities aimed at giving the students a broad introduction to fisheries science as well as an overview of the various maritime industries in Shetland.
The course includes a trip on NAFC's fishing vessel Atlantia II to see a demersal trawl in operation. The students are given the opportunity to sort the catch, collect biological data for each of the main commercial species and undertake a short fisheries research project. Students are also given a tour of the various aquaculture sites in and around the Scalloway area.
During their visit the students stay at the Bridge End Outdoor Centre in Burra Isle.
