#blydepride
Here are a few things you can do to help change attitudes in our community.
In June, Shetland launched its own #blydepride anti-homophobia campaign at the Summer Carnival. Shetland College UHI were proud to be involved in the launch and we continue to work alongside everyone on this really important campaign.
At the same time as the launch, Shetland Islands Council flew the rainbow flag at half mast in memory of those who lost their lives in Orlando. Join the campaign on facebook and twitter and help us work towards acceptance without exception for LGBT people in Shetland.
Everyone can play their part in changing attitudes towards LGBT people. We are #ByYourSide.
Here are ways YOU can change attitudes:
1. Bring your friends and family to your local Pride; share on social media.
2. Look out for one another; we mustn’t be afraid to be ourselves, we must remain visible but also look out for others. Stand by the side of LGBT people and support them if you see them facing negative attitudes or discrimination, whether as a result of their sexuality or gender identity or because of their ethnicity, disability, faith or another difference. We are stronger united.
3. Support local LGBT venues and organisations in your area or region; they need your involvement to thrive. Whether it’s providing targeted services and support for LGBT people, or somewhere to socialise and allow people to be themselves, local spaces need you.
4. Talk to your friends and family; encourage them to express their support and solidarity as allies to the LGBT community. Remind them they have a crucial role to play in challenging homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and campaigning for equality for LGBT people wherever they are.
