MAST Executive Director at NAFC
17 March 2016 - The NAFC Marine Centre had a visit this week from Professor David Paterson, Executive Director of MASTS (Marine Alliance for Science & Technology Scotland).
Professor Paterson was in Shetland this week to attend a SOTEAG (Sullom Oil Terminal Environmental Advisory Group meeting) but took time also to speak to some of NAFC's marine science staff.
The Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS) is a consortium of Scottish marine institutions with the aim of advancing, and encouraging the advance of, marine science and technology in Scotland and elsewhere. NAFC is a member of the consortium through the University of the Highlands & Islands and its staff actively participate in a number of groups within MASTS.
Professor Paterson gave an informative update to NAFC staff on current MASTS activities, including the Scottish Marine Plan for healthy and productive seas that, through forums and collaboration, provide advice to government on new policies and challenges.
The numerous funding mechanisms available through MASTS including visiting fellowships, support for early career researchers and other small grants were discussed. NAFC has been the recipient of funding through these mechanisms in recent years. MASTS also supports a graduate school that provides training for PhD students and opportunities to enhance personal and professional development through an internships scheme.
NAFC staff found the presentation to be interesting and informative and continue to develop links with the various partner organisations within MASTS
