Vision 18 Student Exhibitions
Friday the 8th of June saw the opening of Shetland College UHI’s talented students’ exhibition ‘Vision 18’.
On show was the BA (Hons) Contemporary Textiles Degree Show, as well as work in progress from Year 1, 2 and 3 students. Final year students Rhea Kay and Megan Smith showcased their Degree Show collections.
“We continue to be amazed by the inspiring work which the students produce; we have a strong pair of students graduating from Contemporary Textiles this year. Both have excelled in different ways, and are ending their BA (Hons) careers with interesting and thought provoking Degree Shows. Not only are these students leaving with a textile education, but also pushing the boundaries of what textiles are by incorporating elements such as sound, installation, fashion and photography to an exhibition standard. We look forward to their professional careers with anticipation. The work exhibited from continuing students holds some real gems also with awards placed from national competitions throughout Vision 18.”
The NC Art and Design contribution to Vision 18 came in two parts; End of Year Exhibits and samples of part time student work displayed in corridor exhibitions. Their work can be described as an eye opening array of works in different disciplines. The NC course focuses on building portfolios to ensure graduates go on to study at degree level in their specialist field of Art or Design.
This year, the Forward Directions students worked on personal project with a focus on installation, starting the year exploring different ways of presenting artwork and moving onto work in selected disciplines to produce end of year shows. Exhibitions were on show from the Life Skills Art classes, with the majority of students coming from the Eric Gray. This group included 3 classes of varying levels at SQCF levels 1 and 2. The show was varied and vibrant with a mixture of personal project work, focus on layering and response to artists Jim Lambie and Antoni Tàpies.
The BA (Hons) Fine Art students exhibited a selection of work from first and second year modules. Skill building and experimentation were found in many mediums with outputs in the form of print-making, painting, photography, spatial practice, and drawing.
There was also be a selection of S3 and S4 art and textile design from the Vocational Pathways students.
All were warmly invited to the opening night of ‘Vision 18’ on the 8th June in Shetland college at 18.15 with speeches and exhibition awards, followed by an open viewing of all exhibitions. Canapés were provided on opening night by Skills for Work students from the Hospitality Department.
Shetland College will showcase 3 students at the New Designers Graduate fair in London later this month.
