Director of the Centre for Island Creativity

Malcolm is a very experienced light artist and architectural lighting design consultant with a background in large scale construction and public art projects around the world. He combines his architectural lighting design work with art projects and commissions working principally with light, sound and projection.

Malcolm is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and before his move to the University of the Highlands & Islands in 2021, Malcolm taught at Edinburgh Napier University on the BDes Interior & Spatial Design, MA & MFA Lighting Design. He was Programme Leader for 5 taught masters programmes and Director of the Art & Design Research Centre at Edinburgh Napier University.

Malcolm is the author of, 'Lighting for Interior Design' published by Laurence King Publishing as part of their Portfolio Skills series.

Malcolm is now based at Shetland UHI and is Director of the Centre for Island Creativity. He also leads the Creative Economy Knowledge Exchange Group across UHI. He is an experienced supervisor for research students and leads the university's PhD Creative Practice programme.

Malcolm was external examiner for the MSc Light and Lighting programme at UCL form 2020-2024.

In his private practice work, Malcolm has multiple international awards and has worked on prestigious and iconic projects around the world, including Copenhagen, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the UK.
