Canadian Cod Tag

This tag was found at Mavis Grind in August 2012 by Alanda, Alanoss and Tom-Delton Jamieson and handed into the Marine Centre. The team identified it as belonging to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada.

Contact with DFO confirmed that it is a gill tag that would have been clipped at the mouth and gill to identify a cod of 'no economic value'. As in Shetland, cod fisheries in Canada are managed by quotas, and under certain circumstances fishermen are permitted to tag and land a fish (as oppose to throw it over the side) of 'no value'. The tag was cut at some point and found its way into the water and across the Atlantic.
