The Marine Spatial Planning Team at Shetland UHI is a multi-disciplinary team and has a range of expertise developed across commercial, research and statutory planning projects.
This includes:
- Policy analysis and development
- Stakeholder engagement
- Data and mapping (ARC GIS)
- Constraint mapping
- Processing, analysis and use of vessel tracking technology (inshore VMS, VMS, and AIS)
- Formal assessments such as EIA, SEA, HRA
- Biosecurity Planning and non-native species monitoring
- Marine surveying and habitat mapping
- Predicative modelling

The Marine Spatial Planning team at Shetland UHI has a range of expertise in marine mapping, this includes:
- Constraint mapping to guide development (see Marine Renewables in Shetland section)
- AIS and VMS vessel data analysis
- Predicative habitat mapping
- Participatory mapping of recreation, fisheries and community use
