Scalloway campus
Shetland UHI’s Scalloway Campus is situated in Scalloway, is the most northerly marine institute in the United Kingdom.
Situated on the west coast of the Shetland Islands it is ideally placed to access the vibrant waters around Shetland, Orkney, and northern Scotland. The work undertaken at the Scalloway Campus supports the sustainable development of the marine sectors, applied research providing advice to marine-based industries and other stakeholders within Shetland, wider Scotland, and beyond.
The Scalloway Campus is where our research in Finfish and Shellfish Fisheries, Marine Spatial Planning and Policy, and Aquaculture takes place. We have specialists in fisheries, shellfish, marine planning and policy, species cultivation, marine biology and ecology, invasive non-native species, GIS analysis, and marine surveys.
Staff are supported by modern and well-equipped laboratory facilities for histology and microscopy as well as general laboratory space. Specialised research and survey vessels are equipped with several types of fishing gear including scallop dredges, creels, trawls, and jigging machines as well as technology such as multibeam sonar, sub-bottom profiler, drop down video system, and several options for grab sampling.
Our on-site marine research hatchery is a pump-ashore facility fitted with a drum-filtration and UV sterilisation system. Our fully licensed sea-trials site consists of 12 replicated sea cages and two longlines.
About Scalloway
Scalloway is a small harbour town (with an approximate population of 800) on the west coast of Shetland, about 10 minutes’ drive from the islands' capital Lerwick.
Scalloway is the second largest town in Shetland (after Lerwick) and the islands' historic capital. The town is dominated by its magnificent castle, built in about 1600 by Patrick Stewart, second Earl of Orkney and Lord of Shetland.
Today Scalloway is one of the principal centres of Shetland fisheries and aquaculture industries, and its busy harbour also plays host to commercial and oil-related shipping.
Despite its small size, Scalloway offers a wide range of local amenities (all within 15 minutes’ walk of Shetland UHI) including:
- Shops (including a butcher, chemist and Post Office) stocking a wide range of food and household goods
- Swimming pool
- Hotel, restaurants, cafes and bars
- Doctor
- Barber / hairdresser
- Museum
- Cash machine (charge applies)
- Regular bus service to/from Lerwick

There is a regular bus service (No. 4) from the Viking Bus Station in Lerwick to Scalloway (via the ferry terminal). Buses run at roughly hourly intervals through the day and stop outside the NAFC Marine Centre (Port Arthur).
From the airport (Sumburgh) you will need to take a bus to Lerwick (no. 6) and then take the no. 4 bus to Scalloway (see above).

From Lerwick
Travel time ~10 minutes.
Follow the main road (A970) out of Lerwick and then follow the road signs to Scalloway.
If you have arrived in Lerwick by ferry turn right on leaving the ferry terminal in Lerwick and follow the A970 out of town. Turn left towards Scalloway after 4.5 km (3 miles).
From Sumburgh Airport
Travel time ~40 minutes.
Follow the A970 towards Lerwick. Turn left towards Scalloway after 36km (22 miles), before reaching Lerwick. Turn left again after a further 2km (1.5 miles).
In Scalloway
Bear right at the first mini-roundabout in Scalloway (2nd exit). Turn right at the second mini-roundabout (3rd exit). Follow the road through Scalloway and along the waterfront for about 1km (0.5 mile). The NAFC Marine Centre is on the left after the marina and Scalloway Boating Club.
