History of Shetland in 100 Sites

10 SCQF credits at level 7 (Certificate of HE / first year degree level). Unit cost  £155, but if taken as part of wider study you may be able to get funding through the SAAS (see below).

The module will examine the history of Shetland from the most recent Ice Age to the present day, through the material culture of the archipelago, principally the archaeological sites and landscapes.  Classes will look sequentially at the major societal developments from the Mesolithic (hunter gatherer society) to twentieth century conflict (World Wars I and II and the Cold War). However rather than just being one a list of one thang after another students will be encouraged to think about the big picture, where Shetland sits within the development of Britain and Europe and why culture and society changed, to think about the mechanisms of migration, diffusion of technology and stimuli such as changing environmental conditions.

Twelve Weekly 2.5 hour Videoconference classes with additional suggested reading and student assignments available through the online virtual learning environment (VLE).

Evening Classes 7 to 9.30 Wednesdays starting 22nd January 2025
