Denise Duncan - Student Q&A

Why did you decide to apply for the PDA Education Support Assistant course?

I had been working as a Learning Support Worker for a few years, and as I did not have any formal qualifications related to my position I decided to apply. I thought this course would enable me to learn new methods and skills in helping pupils get a good learning experience.

Can you tell us what you have enjoyed most about studying at UHI Shetland?

I enjoyed being back in the classroom and meeting others on my course. It was interesting talking to students who worked in different schools and swapping ideas and learning how things were done in other schools. I really enjoyed the class discussions we had, they were really informative.

What advice would you give someone who was interested in studying the course?

I would say go for it, it can really help you gain new skills and ideas plus it is a recognised qualification.

How has the course impacted your professional role?

It has given me more confidence in myself at my work. I feel better able to support children through their learning journey and have a greater understanding of child development, and additional support needs in children.
