Centre for Island Creativity researchers, students and alumni on show in Rovaniemi, Finland
In November, arts-based researchers participated in a cluster of events, including book launches, exhibition openings and research presentations at the University of Lapland. PhD student in Creative Practice, Helen Garbett, presented a paper about her investigation of the relations between limpets and humans in the symposium Relate North #12: New Genre Arctic Art Education. Professor Roxane Permar and alumna Susannah Rose from the MA Art and Social Practice also gave presentations.
Artworks generated by socially engaged art projects by alumni Gini Dickinson and Patricia Matthews and student Jane Ronie were exhibited in the exhibition of the same name at galleries in the university’s Art and Design building. Their work is reproduced in the Relate North 2024 new genre arctic art education exhibition catalogue.
The exhibition ‘Flow: Currents of change in our river landscapes’ featured new work by MA Art and Social Practice staff and students, Hayley Anderson, Sophie Brown, Jane Somers and Roxane Permar. They contributed essays to the publication, which is available on open access.
The work is part of the three-year research project ‘Living in the Landscape’ which brings together postgraduate students and interdisciplinary researchers from universities in the UArctic thematic network, Arctic Sustainable Arts and Design (ASAD) including the University of Lapland, UHI Shetland, Umeå University, Nord Universitet Nesna Campus, University of the West of Scotland and Yukon School of Visual Arts.
A third publication was launched at the event, ‘Mapping New Genre Arctic Art Education’ to which Dr Siún Carden and Roxane Permar have each contributed visual essays. Dr Siún Carden has written about the innovative module Communities of Practice that she leads for the MA Art and Social Practice. Permar wrote about the ‘Swap Shots Mobile Film Exchange’ which she led as part of the ‘Home and Belonging’ arts-based research project in 2021/22.
