Green Week 1st to 5th November
Green Week 2021 has been organised by the university's Environment and Sustainability Group in partnership with HISA and coincides with the first week of COP26, the world’s biggest international summit on climate change being held in Glasgow.
Green Week provides an opportunity to raise awareness of environmental issues and the importance of sustainability, whilst encouraging us all to think about what action we can take in our day-to-day lives to be a little greener!
There are lots of events and activities for you to get involved in, as well as promotion of resources to support you in making positive changes towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Take a look at the new Green Resources Hub!
A programme of online sessions is open for bookings. A PDF Timetable is also available to view. Events are open to all UHI students and staff. Please book using your UHI email address.
Why not take a look and see if there are any that interest you? You can book your place and find out more here.

Do you enjoy cycling? Join the Strava Challenge and help us cycle the mileage from each UHI Campus to Glasgow!
As the world’s attention focuses on Glasgow for COP26 to discuss the climate emergency, we invite you to take part in our UHI wide challenge to complete a total of 2465 miles – the total mileage of each UHI partners to Glasgow – in just TWO WEEKS to pedal our concerns towards the wellbeing of our communities and the ecosystem! Sign up here: https://hisa.native.fm/event/pedal-to-cop-26/69340 (you might have to create a Native account but it takes less than a minute!).
Let’s see if Shetland can get the most mileage!
Enter Our Green Week Short Story Competition!
The short story competition will ask the question:
'What might life look like 25 years in the future if 2°C warming occurs?'
If you'd like to take part, you will be asked to write flash fiction, which means no more than 500 words (1 page single spaced and 2 pages double spaced). The competition will be open from the 1st to the 12th November and the panel will judge them by the following week with winners announced on Friday, 19th.
Please send your entry (1 entry per student) to hisaactivities@uhi.ac.uk before the 12th November, 5pm.
Shetland Students Green Team Lunchtime Beach Clean!
Shetland Students Green Team are organising a lunchtime beach clean along the shore in Scalloway on Thursday 4th November.
Students, staff, friends and members of the public are welcome! We will meet outside the Scalloway Campus of Shetland UHI at 12.30pm (formerly NAFC Marine Centre UHI) and walk along the shore.
Gloves and bin bags will be provided and we’d love to see any staff and students that can make it. We will be there until 1.30pm if you’d like to join us later than 12.30pm.
Feel free to take a hot drink and snack for a social litter pick over the lunch break!
Keep an eye on the Shetland Students Green Team page for the event.
