NAFC Student of the Year
Kamil Michalik, who worked hard to overcome the barriers he faced, has been named as the NAFC Marine Centre UHI Student of the Year.
Kamil (20) has just completed a HNC in nautical science with the University of the Highlands and Islands.
Originally from Poland, Kamil moved to Skye with his mother when he was a teenager. He joined the Scalloway-based NAFC Marine Centre's Officer Cadet Programme in 2013 to undertake a National Certificate in Maritime and Shipping Operations.
As a student with dyslexia, Kamil faces difficulties with reading, writing and spelling. He was also studying in his second language. Despite these challenges, he worked diligently to successfully fulfil all the requirements of the courses.
Kamil was nominated for the award by senior nautical lecturer, Mark Fullerton. Mr Fullerton explained: “Kamil is very deserving of this award as he is diligent in his studies and has managed, through hard work and dedication, to achieve all that is asked of him. He is a very smart, friendly and responsible young man who is a credit to our Centre and who will make an excellent seafarer and employee.”
Kamil said: “I did not expect to win. It was a very good surprise when I received the news. There is a lot of new information to take in and I would not be where I am now without help from Mark, Sid, Shubham and basically all of the NAFC Marine Centre UHI deck department staff. I would like to thank them and Caroline for putting up with me and to North Star Shipping for giving me an opportunity to get my officer of the watch certificate.” Willie Shannon, of NAFC Marine Centre UHI’s interim manager, said: “Kamil shows what can be achieved by commitment to his studies and I am sure that he will succeed in his chosen career as part of a global industry. On behalf of the NAFC Marine Centre I wish him all the best”.
Kamil was presented with his certificate in Aberdeen by North Star Shipping’s Managing Director, Callum Bruce. Kamil is currently gaining experience as a Deck Cadet onboard North Star Shipping’s vessels.
