Lifeboat Visit
NAFC students visited the Lerwick Lifeboat Station last week.
The students, enrolled on the Centre's Merchant Navy Officer Cadet Programme, received an informative and enthusiastic tour of the RNLI's Lerwick lifeboat station and of the relief lifeboat Fraser Flyer (currently standing in for the Lerwick lifeboat Michael and Jane Vernon) from three of her volunteer crew. As well as trying out some of the equipment carried by the lifeboat the students also saw the her inflatable 'Y' boat being used to conduct a man-overboard drill. They were also challenged to get kitted up and get the lifeboat ready to launch within the 9 minute target time.
The students had previously visited the Coastguard Rescue Coordination Centre in Lerwick, and will be visiting the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter at Sumburgh in the near future to complete their familiarisation with local search and rescue assets.
