Artists Inspired
Art students from Shetland College UHI visited the NAFC Marine Centre UHI this week to seek inspiration for their art work.
The students are enrolled on the newly offered BA Fine Art course at Shetland College, which started in September, and visited the Centre in search of inspiration for their current painting module.
The visit - organised by NAFC staff member Charlotte Slater - was part of an ongoing collaboration between Shetland College and NAFC to provide art students with ideas for their art from the Centre's facilities and activities. During their visit the students were shown a wide variety of objects and activities. Amongst other things they had the chance to study some of NAFC's collection of fish and shellfish, to view otoliths (fish ear-bones - used for aging) under a microscope in one of the laboratories, and to watch a variety of work being carried out by engineering apprentices in the workshops, including metal cutting and welding.
The art students took away lots of ideas from their visit and hope to be able to incorporate some of these into their art work.
The Centre hopes to offer further opportunities to BA Fine Art students from Shetland College in the future.
