Onboard Safety
Safety books issued to merchant navy officer cadets at NAFC Marine Centre UHI.
This morning, before they headed off to don safety equipment and learn about entering enclosed spaces safely, NAFC's latest class of deck officer cadets were presented with their free copies of Onboard Safety, kindly donated by publisher Weatherby Seamanship.
The book, written by Gary Ritchie, provides the cadets with an easy to follow, detailed and interesting guide to many aspects of working on board ships. Topics covered include: shipboard safety organisation, inductions and familiarisations for new crew, safe means of access to and on board ship, general housekeeping, risk assessments, permit to work systems and specific hazardous activities such as entry into enclosed spaces and mooring operations.
The Centre's new class of engineering cadets will received their copies of the safety guide when they return from the fire fighting training that they are currently undergoing.
NAFC's officer cadet programme trains Deck and Engineer Officers for the Merchant Navy through periods of study at NAFC alternating with periods of service at sea on merchant ships.
