Seaweed Activities
The NAFC Marine Centre UHI has published an education pack to encourage school children to explore their local sea shore by discovering what seaweeds grow there and how they can be a useful resource for art, food and biofuels.
The education pack, authored by NAFC Seaweed Researchers Christine Rolin and Rhiannon Inkster, includes information about seaweed, an identification guide, and suggestions for activities, including making your own art, food and biofuels from seaweed.
The pack has been produced as part of a a project Fuelling the Future - Biofuels from Kelp, which was funded through the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology in Scotland (MASTS). The Centre also collaborated with the RSPB’s Karen Mackelvie on delivering the project called Coastal Creatures which helped local schools explore the sea shore.
The project also saw around 70 people from the Shetland Motor Show 2016 visit the NAFC Marine Centre in June.
